Best Boston Brands: 2017

By: Seamus Fay

I definitely wouldn’t call myself the most fashionable person, but as I’ve learned more about the Boston communities of music and fashion alike, I have become more interested in the local brands and lines of clothing coming out of the area. Below is a list of a few of standout brands that are, in my opinion, the best brands in Boston.

Champloo

Founded by Derrick Houston Jr, Champloo is a high-quality brand that has some of the most detailed clothing I’ve seen. With every piece hand sewn and/or hand-dyed, Houston makes all of his clothing personal, and the craftsmanship and detail is always apparent. “Champloo” means “a mix of many things”, which the brand goes above and beyond to demonstrate by using multiple fabrics, dyes, etc. in one single piece to create unity between all of the different materials. You can buy Champloo clothing from the website or from Bodega, and be on the lookout for new collections coming this year.

STRAWS

STRAWS has been a staple in the fashion of the Boston rap scene for some time now, with people like Michael Christmas, Cousin Stizz, etc. wearing the brand all over the country. Receiving cosigns from various figures including DJ Paul, Virgil Abloh, and more, STRAWS is known for its cultural references and nostalgic style, making the clothing resonate with people far beyond its visual appeal. On top of this, STRAWS is really for the culture, as one of their most popular shirts, a Max B shirt with the address to send mail to him in prison, donates all of its sales to the legendary rapper’s Jpay to help free him. You can buy STRAWS clothing here.

Farewell USA

Farewell USA is a brand that explores darker ideas, always making new products that go hand in hand with the dark connotation of the word “farewell”. With detail similar to that of Champloo, this brand’s weathered leather jackets, hand sewn one-of-one pieces, etc. make it a top notch competitor out of Boston. I’m definitely a fan of the use of the word “Farewell” for a clothing line because of the tone it sets and the room for creativity it presents, and the brand has capitalized on that very well. Bandulu

Bandulu is an interesting brand in the way it creates, as the word itself means”fake”. The idea of Bandulu is to take old clothing and add their own spin to rejuvenate it, making the clothing fake in a sense but also making it have more personality and life than before. Whether it’s adding paint splatters and the brand name onto an old college sweatshirt or using embroidered letters of all different shapes, styles, and colors to put the logo on an old NBA jersey, Bandulu always keeps it creative, and you never know what’s going to happen next. You can buy Bandulu clothing here.
